Lyrics

Tuman yarom pri doline
Da shirokoy list na kaline
Da esho shirshe na dubochku

Da ponyal golub’ golubochku

Ponyal svoyu, ne chuzhuya
Panyanochku moloduya
Da panyanochka muku seya

Da na pylochku nabivaya

Da kalachiki natiraya
Da na rechen’ku otsylaya
Da za rechkoyu za rechkoyu

Zhivyot Vanya – kovalyochek

Da ty skuy zhe mne toporochek
Da poydi, Vanya, vo lesochek
Da srubi, Vanya, topolyochek
Sdelay Naste kholodochek

Da chtob Nastya da ne gorela
Zhivotom serdtsem da ne bolela
Da byla b Nastya veselaya
Da byla b Nastya veselaya

Valley mist at the steep shore
Broad leave of the guelder rose
The oak leaves are even broader
A dove couple in love

You know, it’s not strange
The young girl
The girl sieves flour
And raises the dust

She bakes kalachiki
And sends it to the river
At the river
Lives Vanya, the blacksmith

Forge me an axe
Go, Vanya, in the forest

Chop down, Vanya, a poplar
Provide Nastya a shadow

So that Nastya doesn’t get hot
So that she has no heartache
So that Natya will be happy
So that Natya will be happy

Lyrics

Taken from Sonia and Christians syllabus:

Foaie verde ş-un dudău                                  Green foliage on the trees
Am fost gospodar şi eu mă                            I was a good worker in the past
Avea-m mâţe şi gâsac                                     I had cats and geese
Şi făină într-un sac.                                        And flour in a bag.
Avea-m car cu două roate şi doi cai cu           I had a two-wheel cart and two horses
urechi plate.                                                    with flat ears.
Avea-m câine, avea-m ţap dar                        I had a dog, I had a billy goat, but
s-au dus cu lumea-n cap.                                I lost everything.
Mi-a plăcut crâşma şi ţuica                             I loved the tavern and the brandy (ţuica),
Ş-amu trag de coadă mâţa                               And now I twiddle my thumbs.

Uşurel şi numai lin,                                        Quietly and calmly
Anul nou ca să cinstim.                                  We will honour the New Year.
Hop hop hop ha ha                                         Hop hop hop ha ha
Cât îi moşu di bătrân!                                     How the old man has aged!
Tot aşteaptă măr din sân                                 He expects everything to fall into his lap
Dar să-ş puie pofta-n cui că nui măr de          Forget it, no fruit is going to fall.
seama lui măi.

Cât îi baba de bătrână                                     How the old woman has aged!
Tot aşteaptă voie bună                                    She expects to be satisfied
De trei ori pe săptămână                                 Three times a week
Şi de zece ori pe lună                                      And ten times a month.
Joacă moşu cu baba nu ti da nu ti lăsa,           Dance old man and old woman, don’t stop,
haida.                                                              Keep going!

Joacă moşu şi cu baba                                    Dance old man with the old woman
Parcă-s ursul şi cu capra                                 Like the bear and the she-goat
Joacă baba şi cu moşu                                    Dance old woman with the old man
Parcă-s zdreanţa şi cucoşu                              Like the poodle and the rooster
La pământ cu spatili să-ţi arăt păcatili             With my back to the floor, I show you the sins
La pământ cu şelili să-ţi arăt greşelili.             With my belly to the floor, I show you the flaws
Haida! Să jucăm pi masă                                Come! We’ll dance on the table,
S-a ducem noroc în casă,                                To bring happiness into the house,
hop hop şi numa-şa!                                       hop hop, that’s it!

Slavjanka - Славјанка (Serbia/Croatia)

Posted on August 12, 2017 by muo

Slavjanka
Славјанка
Serbia/Croatia

These notes ©2017, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught to the international folkdance community by Dick Crum and Al Bahr in the 1950s. It was also taught by John Filcich, Michael Herman, Dennis Boxell, Dick Oakes and Michael Ginsberg. There is some dispute as to where it's from. Some people say it's a city ballroom kolo from Belgrade in Serbia, others say it comes from Vojvodina (a multi-ethnic region between Croatia and Serbia) and others call it Croatian. As for many dances of the Balkans, I think we can safely assume that there is some legitimacy to all of those claims of origin.

Music:
  • National 454B;
  • Ostali Muzikasi;
  • RCA Victor 3025.
  • Starogradske Pesme
  • Tamburaški ansambl Tajna
  • Narakord (a little fast)
Meter: 2/4
Formation: Closed circle, shoulder hold (or W position in some notes)
Introduction: None, start right away.

Part 1

Bar 1: Step on R to R (1), close L next to right and bounce on both feet (2), bounce again (&)
Bars 2-8: repeat bar 1, seven more times
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8, with opposite footwork and direction

Part 2

Bar 1: Rock forward into the center on R (1), Rock back onto L (2)
Bar 2: Step on R next to L (1), Hop on R, lifting L foot up next to R (2)
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork.
Bars 5-16: repeat bars 1-4, three more times (four times in total)

Alternate the steps until the end of the music.
