Oxdans (Sweden)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie.  There are many many many different versions of this dance. In all cases they mimic the two men having some kind of competition or fight.

Music: MH1055, RCA Victor 20-5309
Meter: 2/4
Formation: Traditionally two men, start facing each other
Introduction: depends on the recording.

Part 1: Intimidation

Bars 1-2: one dancer stands on his toes, with L foot forward and makes an aggressive pose over the other. The other dancer, cowers in fear.
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2, but with the other dancer taking the aggressive pose.
Bar 5-8: repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-12: repeat the actions of bars 1-8, but in double time
Bars 13-16: repeat the actions of bars 9-12

Part 2: Chorus

(I've described this step the way it seems to be most commonly done, rather than the way it's done in the Faust's video below. The step can either be done with both traveling in the same direction, or traveling in opposite directions. If traveling in the same direction one of the dancers has to do the opposite footwork)
Bar 1:Step R to R, Arms go out to the side (1) Close L next to R (&), Step R to R (2)
Bar 2: Stamp L next to R, bring arms in together touching fists together with elbows out to the side (1), Stamp L again (2)
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork, except only stamp once.
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 3:  Hand Grab

Bars 1-2: Take both hands with other dancer, jump on both feet with R foot forward, pulling L hand back with L elbow bent. Hold
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 pulling R arm back and putting L foot forward
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 5-8, double time twice.

Part 4: Chorus

Part 5:  Elbows

Do the footwork of part 4, but have hands on hips, Hit R elbows against each other, then L elbows etc.

Part 7: Punch

Bars 1-2: Person 1 fake punches Person 2, Person 2 jumps backwards bent over.
Bars 3-4: Repeat bars 1-2 with the other man doing the punching
Bars 5-8: Repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-12: Repeat bars 1-8 but double time
Bars 13-16: Repeat bars 9-12

Part 8: Chorus

Part 9: Head pull

Bars 1-2: Grab the back of the other person's head, and person 1 pulls it down.
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 with the other man doing the pulling
Bars 5-8: Repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-12: Repeat bars 1-8 but double time
Bars 13-16: Repeat bars 9-12

Part 10: Chorus

Part 11: Making Faces

Bars 1-2: Putting hands in taunting position (eg. wiggling fingers in front of nose or over ears), person 1 taunts person 1
Bars 3-4: Repeat bars 1-2 with person 2 doing the taunting
Bars 5-8: Repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-12: Repeat bars 1-8 but double time
Bars 13-16: Repeat bars 9-12

Part 12: Chorus

Part 13: Slaps

Bars 1-2: Person 1 fake slaps Person 2's face. (Person 2 claps make the slapping noise)
Bars 3-4: Repeat bars 1-2 with person 2 doing the slapping
Bars 5-8: Repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-12: Repeat bars 1-8 but double time
Bars 13-16: Repeat bars 9-12

Part 14: Chorus

Repeat part 2  except on the last 2 counts twirl around CCW with a jump. Shake hands, and walk off arm in arm

Music: Schottis I Byn with Saby Draget
Meter: 4/4
Formation: couple, M in the center W on the outside
Introduction: start at the beginning of any musical phrase

Schottis step: step on O (1), I (2), O (3), hop on O (4); repeat with opposite footwork

Part 1

Bar 1:  Starting with outside foot do one Schottis step forward in LOD (OIO, hop)
Bars 2-3: Do a Parisar turn (Parisar Turn: using Schottis footwork, make a complete turn away from each other, M turning CCW, W turning CW)
Bar 4: do one Schottis steps forward in LOD (IOI hop)
Bar 5: Get into shoulder-shoulder blade position (closed position), with M stepping on O in front of W (1), hop on O (2), Turning CW, Step on I (3), hop on I (4)
Bar 6: Do one schottis step turning CW as a couple (OIO hop)
Bars 7-8: Continuing the turn by stepping on I (1) hop on I (2), Do one Schottis step (O (3), I, (4) O (1), hop (2)), Step on I (3), hop on I (4)
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8

Note: Bars 5-8 are Step hop (O), Step Hop (I) Schottis (OIO hop), Step hop (I), Schottish (OIO hop), Step hop (I).  The second schottis step crosses the bars

Part 2

Bars 1-4: Holding nearer hands. Man does 4 schottis Steps in place, while woman dances in a CCW circle around him (start by dancing in front of him. Don't drop hands.
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 5-8 of part 1.
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8

Part 3

Bar 1: With M in the middle, holding both hands, Step on O in LOD (1), pause (2), Cross I over O in LOD (3), pause (4)
Bar 2: One Schottis step in LOD while facing partner (O, I, O, hop)
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 of part 3  with opposite footwork and direction
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 5-8 of part 1.
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8

Swedish Finn Mixer (Sweden)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Edward Gollar, who learned it at the Festival in Uddevala of the Svenska Ungdomsringen fro Bygdekultur

Music: SCLP 1021 (This recording is also sometimes used for Norwegian Polka)
Meter: 2/4
Formation: Couple in a circle, M in the center. Face partner.
Introduction: none

Use a walking step throughout unless otherwise noted
Bars 1-4: Turn partner by the R
Bars 5-8: Turn partner by the L
Bars 9-16: Retain L hand and then put R hand on partner's R shoulder. Use 16 buzz steps to swing with partner, on the last count drop R hands and W makes an extra 1/2 CW turn to get into varsouvienne position.
Bars 17-24: In varsouvienne position, promenade around the circle CCW.
Bars 25-32: Drop L hand and woman cast off, then drop R hands once the woman is facing RLOD. Then M promenades solo CCW and W promenades solo CW. Find a new partner.  If you don't find a partner, go into the middle, someone else will be there.

Repeat until the end of the music.
