Što Mi E Milo - Harvey's SQQ version (Macedonia)

Posted on October 27, 2016 by muo

Što Mi E Milo (Harvey's SQQ version)
Що Ми Е Мило
(Macedonia)

These notes ©2014, Andrew Carnie.

This dance is a bit of a mystery to me. I haven't been able to find a printed source for this. We learned it from Harvey Gardner, who learned it in Santa Fe from Scott Lowry. It has the feel of a North American IFD choreography to it, but I have no clue if that's true. Generally speaking when I've danced in other places people simply do a Lesnoto to this music. There is an entirely different IFD dance choreographed to this same tune by Jim Gold.

The song Što Mi E Milo is also sometimes done in 9/8 time, to which there is a completely different dance. The notes for the 9/8 version are linked here.

Music:

Bar 3: Step on R to R (S), Lift L (QQ)

Lyrics

from http://www.sacredcircles.com/THEDANCE/HTML/DANCEPAG/SHTOMI.HTM

Shto mi e milo, milo i drago
Vo Struga grada, mamo, djukjan da imam.

Lele varaj mome, mome Kalino,
Vo Struga grada, mamo, djukjan da imam

Koga po voda, voda mi odat,
So tia stomni, mamo, stomni shareni.

Lele varaj mome, mome Kalino,
So tia stomni, mamo, stomni shareni.

How I would like to have a shop
In the town of Struga
Hurry, young Kalino
To sit by the door
And watch the young girls of Struga go by
Hurry, young Kalino
As they fetch water
With their brightly colored jugs
Hurry, young Kalino
And meet with their friends at the well
Hurry, young Kalino

Dafino vino crveno

Dafino vino crveno

Momcheto ti e zaspalo

Mi pominale ajduti,
guncheto mu go ukrale.

Guncheto mu go ukrale,
vo meana mu go prodale.
Guncheto mu go ukrale,
vo meana mu go prodale.

Vo meana mu go prodale
za rujno vino crveno.
Za rujno vino crveno
i bela luta rakija.

Ako mu ukrale guncheto,
neka mi e zhivo momcheto.
Ako mu ukrale guncheto,
neka mi e zhivo momcheto.
Dafina, red wine

Dafina, red wine,
your boyfriend was asleep.
Your boyfriend was asleep,
on Karakamen mountain.

On Karakamen mountain,
on a slope without water.
Along came hajduks
and stole his vest.

They stole his vest
and sold it in a tavern.
They stole his vest
and sold it in a tavern.

Sold it in a tavern,
exchanged it for red wine,
Exchanged it for red wine,
and fine strong rakija.

I don't care if they stole his vest,
as long as my boyfriend is alive.
I don't care if they stole his vest,
as long as my boyfriend is alive.

Pirin, Macedonia

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. The dance was originally taught by Michel Cartier and was also taught by Dick Crum.  The version I learned from Gerry Spinks, which is in the video I have linked below is noted below. Michael Cartier's version is slightly different. You can find a link to his notes below as well.

Lyrics

From Cartier's original notes. The music we have is an instrumental version only
Gosti vi Kajat gorno no male
Idam nejdam, Idam nejdam
Stebe ne idam sama ke dojdam

Gosti vi Kaja gorno me male
Idam nejdam, Idam nejdam
Stebe Nejdam šo ke mi činiš

You are invited, maybe I will go, Maybe I will not.
