Sárközi Tánc (Hungary)

These notes ©2017, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Andor Czompo. The title of this dance  means "dance from Sárközi"

Music: Westminster XWN19008
Meter: 4/4
Formation: Circle, hands joined down in V position (Men can be in an inside circle in shoulder hold)
Introduction: 3 bars no action.

Part 1 (instrumental or men singing)

If this step is done in separate circles the men do the reverse footwork, traveling in RLOD (CW) direction.
Bar 1: Traveling in LOD (CCW) step R (1,2), L (3,4)
Bar 2: Still traveling n LOD, step R (1), L (2), R (3), L (4)
Bar 3: Jump onto both feet at shoulder width, toes turned in (1,2), Jump on both feet together, clicking heels (3,4)
Bars 4-6: repeat bars 1-3
Bars 7-9: repeat bars 1-3

The first time through the dance you only do this 3 times as noted above, because of the 3 bar introduction, on repeats you have to add a fourth time through:

Bars 9-12: repeat bars 1-3

Part 2 (women singing)

Bar 1: Hop on L (1), Step on R heel in front of L, turning R toe from inside (L) to outside (R) (&), Step on L in place (2), Hop on L again (3), repeat heel step with toe twizzle (&), Step on L again (4)
Bar 2: Drop hands, and do a complete CW turn in place, pulling R shoulder back and stepping R (1), L (2), R (3), L (4)
Bar 3: Rejoin hands if in a single circle, if in two circles, only women rejoin hands, jump on both feet at shoulder width apart (1,2),  If in separate circles, M clap hands on count (2). Snap feet together (3,4)
Bars 4-12: repeat bars 1-3, three more times

Székely Verbunk - Czompo Version (Hungary)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Andor Czompo. The dance is from Transylvania. There was another dance by the same name taught by Kalman Magyar, it is quite different.

Music:Special 45 AC
Meter: 2/4
Formation: Individual men, scattered around the room.
Introduction: 8 counts no action. Start with main melody.

Part 1:

Bar 1: Click R foot next to L with weight (1), snap fingers (hands held out to sides) (2)
Bar 2: Click L foot next to R with weight (1), snap fingers (2)
Bar 3: Click R foot next to L with weight (1), clap hands (&), Click L foot next to R with weight (2), clap hands (&)
Bar 4: Click R foot next to L, no weight (1), pause (2)
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 2:

Bar 1: Through out this bar and the next, you turn your body slightly to the R. Step on R in place (1), Cross L heel over in front of R (&), Step on R in place (2), continue turning to the R by crossing L heel over R (&),
Bar 2: Step on R in place, continue turning to R (1), Cross L heel over (&),  Step on R in place with a knee bend (2), pause (&)
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork and direction (turning body to face the L
Bars 5-6: repeat bars 1-2
Bar 7: Facing center, jump on both feet together clicking heels as you do so (1), jump on both feet spread apart at shoulder width (2)
Bar 8: Jump on both feet together, clicking heels (1), pause (2)

Parts 3-4:

repeat parts 1-2

Part 5:

Bar 1: clap hands together (1), Lift R heel up back, hit R heel with R hand (&), Step on R next to L (2), Lift L heel back and hit with L hand (&)
Bar 2: Step on L (1), hit L thigh with L hand, while lifting R up (&), hit inside of R calf with R hand (2), Close R next to L, no weight, while hitting L thigh with L hand (&)
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2
Bars 5-6: repeat bars 1-2
Bars 7-8.  Andor's notes say to repeat bars 1-2 one more times, but in the video below the dancers repeat bar 1, and then do the following alternation bar 8:  Clap both hands (1), bend over at waist and slap R hand against top of boot of R foot (which is on the ground (&), Then slap L hand against top of L boot (2), then R hand agains top of R boot.
Bars 9-12: repeat bars 5-8 of part 2 (heels and then close open close)

Parts 6-7:

Part 8:

Introduction: Start with singing

Part 1 (Music part A)

Men:
Bar 1: Walk forward in LOD, R (1,2), L (3,4)
Bar 2: Leap on R forward (1), Click L heel closed next to R (2). Jump on both feet at shoulder width, heels slightly out (3), Jump on both feet together, clicking heels (4)
Bar 3: Click R foot next to L in place, with weight (1), Click L foot next to R in place with weight (2), Click R foot next to L in place, no weight (3), pause (4)
Bars 4-6: repeat bars 1-3

Bar 2-6: Repeat bar 1, two more times (12 crosses in total)
Bars 7-11: Continuing with Rida step, break into couples and spin each couple CW, 10 crosses in total
Bar 12: Open up with L on the R, stomp on  R (1), Click L with weight (2), Click R next to L with weight raising free hand in the air (3). Pause (4)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Taught by Elsie Ivancich-Dunin, who learned it in Yugoslavia in 1957, from Antun Krickovic, who was from Hungary.

Music: International Record S 705,"I Give Up"
Meter: 4/4 and 2/4
Formation: Couples, arranged in two concentric open circles. Everyone facing into the center. Men are in a center line with hands on hips. Women are on the outside, standing to the R and back of their partner. They have hands forward on the shoulders of the M and his neighbor.
Introduction: None

Part 1

Bar 1: Step R to R (1). Close L next to R with weight (2). Step R to R (3). Close L next to R with weight (4)
Bars 2-3: repeat bar 1, two more times.
Bar 4: Turning 1/2 way CW, Click R next to L with weight (1), Click L next to R, with W (2), click R next to L with weight (3), pause (4). In this step M turn in place. W stomp into the center, so they end up slightly behind their partner again (essentially in the same formation as the starting position, but facing out).
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork, starting facing out.
Bars 9-12: repeat bars 1-4, except don't turn on bar 4. Just do it in place facing center. W does not take weight on the final count, so that her R foot is free.

Part 2

Bar 1: M pulls his R shoulder back, stepping L (1), R (2), W steps R (1), L (2), moving forward next to partner. Holding nearing hand (M's R, W's L), facing partner, jump on both feet apart at shoulder width (3). Jump on both feet together (4).
Bar 2: Arm swings forward, and going back to back step M's L, W's R (1), Step forward in LOD on M's R, W's L (2). Turning to face partner, jump on both feet apart at shoulder width, swinging arms back (3), Jump on both feet together (4).
Bars 3-4: repeat bar 2, two more times.

Part 3

In bars 1-3, the couple rotates CW to the L. 
Bar 1. Move into shoulder-waist position (facing partner, M's hands on W's waist, W's hands resting on M's shoulders), both hop on L, lifting R knee up, R heel in (1). Hop on L, R heel swinging out (2). Step on R next to L (3). Step on L next to R (&). Step on R next to L (4).
Bar 2: Repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork
Bar 3: Repeat bar 1.
Bar 4: Open up to face the center, forming a closed circle in shoulder hold, with W on the right, W hops on R touching L across R. M hops on L touching R across  L (1). Everyone jumps on both feet at shoulder width (2). Jump on both feet together (3). Pause (4)

Part 4

In a closed circle, with shoulder hold
Bar 1: Step on R to R (1). Step on L behind R (2), Step on R to R (3). Čukče on R, while lifting L up (4)
Bar 2: Repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork and direction
Bars 3-4: Repeat bars 1-2  

Part 5

In a closed circle, hands dropping to V position, and dancing in place, use the footwork of part 3 but facing center. 

Part 6

Bar 1: W put hands on hips, rolling across in front partner and switching sides with partner, step L (1), R (2), L (3), stamp R next to L (4). M puts R hand on W's back and pushes her across him catching her with his L hand. He steps R (1), L (2), R (3) to right side, the stamps L. 
Bar 2: Repeat bar 1, with opposite footwork and direction, rolling back to original side. 
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2, except on the last count M takes weight on R foot, to leave the L foot free for part 7

Bar 7: 

In a closed (or open circle) with hands down in V position
Bar 1: Everyone step L to L (1), Close R next to L no weight (2), Step R to R (3). Close R next to L no weight (4)
Bar 2: Step L to L (1), Close R next to L with weight (2), Step L to L (3), Close R next to L, no weight (4)
Bars 3-4: Repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork and direction
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 8

Bars 1-2: repeat bars 1-2 of part 2
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 of part 3, making a complete turn.
Bars 5-6: repeat bars 1-2
Bars 7-8: repeat bars 3-4 of part 3, ending facing center in a closed circle.

Parts 9-12

repeat parts 4-7, except part 7 is done with hands above heads in Y position

Part 13:

Get in shoulder-waist position, but standing side by side, R-shoulder to R-shoulder.Bar 1: Down beat rida step: swinging CW with partner, cross R over L (1). Step L to L (2). Cross R over L (3). Step L to L (4)Bars 2-4: repeat bar 1, three more times

Part 14:

Music switches to a fast 2/4 time. Face partner, put hands on hips

upbeat: extend M's R, W's L to side
Bar 1: Step on M's R, W's L in place (1), Step on M's L, W's R next to other foot (&), Step on M's R, W's L in place (2). Kick M's L and W's R to side
Bar 2: repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork
Bars 3-6: repeat bars 1-2, two more times
Bar 7: Hop on M's L, W's R, Touching M's R toe and W's L across in front of the other foot (1), 
Bar 8: Jump on both feet at shoulder's width (1), pause (2)

Part 15:

During this step, you make a complete turn in place, 1/2 way per bar. 
Bar 1: take inside hand and step on M's R and W's L across in front of the other foot, swinging hands forward and up (1), Hop on M's R, W's L, while turning 1/2 way (M CCW, W CW) to face out, Drop hands (2)
Bar 2: Step on M's L, W's R in place, hands on hips (1), hop on M's L, W's R, completing M's CCW turn and W's CW turn to face partner (2)
Bar 3: Hop on M's L, W's R, Touching M's R toe and W's L across in front of the other foot (1), 
Bar 4: Jump on both feet at shoulder's width (1), pause (2)
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 16:

Bars 1-4: Face LOD, hands held with partner, back up with 8 skipping steps backing up in RLOD, starting by stepping backwards on R
Bars 5-8: do 4 leaping pas de basques moving forward.
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-4, two more times (16 skipping step backing up)

Part 17

Bar 1: Man turn to face LOD, W turns to face RLOD, M travels to outside. W travels to the inside. Hop on L (1)  Step R to R (2), Close L next to R (3). Hands are on hips
Bars 2-3: repeat bar 1, two more times.
Bar 4: Step R (1), L (&), R (2) in place 
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork and direction

Part 18

Bar 1: Facing partner with arms extended forward, Rock forward on R (1) pause (2)
Bar 2: Rock back on L (1), pause (2)
Bar 3: Get in shoulder-waist position, R shoulder to R shoulder. Turning with partner CW, Step R (1), L (2) forward.
Bars 4-7: repeat bar 3, four more times
Bar 8: Man takes 2 steps, R, L in place.  W breaks from handhold and spins solo with two steps R (1), L (2) to end facing CCW. 

Part 19

Everyone is facing CCW (LOD). M is behind W and slightly to the R, his L hand on her L hip. Holding her R hand in his to the side. 
Bar 1: Hop on L (1)  Step R to R (2), Close L next to R (3). Hands are on hips
Bars 2-3: repeat bar 1, two more times.
Bar 4: Step R (1), L (&), R (2) in place 
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork and direction, R hand on W's R hip.

Part 20: 

Repeat part 18

Part 21: Ending

Bar 1: W rolls out away from man holding W's L in M's R
Bar 2: W rolls back in to "sweetheart" position. M raise W hand and shout Csuhaj!

Formation: Line of Men, standing solo.
Introduction: 8 bars no action

Part 1

Bar 1: Hop on L, hooking R in front (1). Step on R to R (2).
Bar 2: Step on L behind R (1). Rock forward on R (2)
Bar 3: Hop on R, touching L heel forward (1),  Jump on both feet apart at shoulder width (2)
Bar 4: Jump on balls of both feet together (1), fall on flat of both feet (2)
Bar 5: Leap off of R, turning to face L, clap hands (1), land on L, hitting R heel with R hand out to the side (&) Cross R over L (2), step L to L (&)
Bar 6: Touch R heel forward  (1), jump onto both feet at shoulder width (2)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Taught in the US by Andor Czompo. This is a recruiting dance from Kapuvar. Czompo's version has a women's part, which isn't in most versions of this dance. Other versions introduced by Alice Reisz and Agostin Lanyi (which Czompo also taught).

Formation: Traditionally it's a line of men (only). This version has an inner circle of women in a front basket (Czompo's notes say back basket), and an outer circle of men solo, with hands on hips.
Introduction: Wait through 3 chords, and start with main melody.

Men's dance

Part 1

Bars 1-3: Moving in a CW direction, walk 6 slow walking steps, starting with R foot. 2 counts per step.
Bar 4: Click R heel closed next to L, with weight (1), Click L heel closed next to R, with weight (2), Click R heel closed next to L, with weight (3), fall onto L back in place, kicking R foot forward (4)
Bars 5-16: repeat bars 1-4, three more times.

Part 2

Bar 1: Facing center, bounce on heels 3 times. Hold hands up in Y position. Snap on each count (1,2,3) pause (4)
Bars 2-3: repeat bar 1, three more times.
Bar 5: Leap onto R, making a 1/2 turn CCW (Pull L shoulder back) to face out (1). Jump on both feet at shoulder width. Hands come to chest (2). Close feet together, arms shoot out to Y position again (3), pause (4)
Bar 6: Repeat bar 5, turning back to face center
Bars 7-8: repeat bars 5-6
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8

Part 3

Bar 1  Arms are in Y position. Hop on L, Lift R up with R heel in (1), Hop on L, push R heel outwards to the R (2), Step on R next to L (3) pause (4)
Bar 2: repeat bar 2 with opposite footwork
Bar 3: Bounce on heels 3 times. Hold hands up in Y position. Snap on each count (1,2,3). Pause (4)
Bar 4: Click R heel closed next to L, with weight (1). Click L heel closed next to R, with weight (2). Click R heel closed next to L, no weight (3). Pause (4) 
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4
Bar 9: Hop on L, kicking R foot forward straight. Slap R shin with R hand (1). Leap onto R, kicking L out to side with L foot facing back (2). Click L next to R, no weight (3). Fall on L (4)
Bars 1-16: repeat bar 9, seven more times

Repeat the entire from the beginning two more times. 

Women's dance

Part 1

Bar 1: Step on R to R (1). Step on L behind R (2). Step on R to R (3). Hop on R (4)
Bar 2: Step on L to L (1), hop on L (2), Leap on R to R, bringing L foot next to R ankle (3). Leap on L to L, bringing R next to L ankle (4)
Bars 3-16: repeat bars 1-2, seven more times.

Part 2

Bar 1: Rida Step: Cross R over L (1). Step on L to L (&). Cross R over L (2). Step on L to L (&). Cross R over L (3). Step on L to L (&). Cross R over L (4). Step on L to L (&)

Formation: Line of Women, hands down in V position or in front basket hold
Introduction: One chord of music, then a pause then start with singing.

Part 1: Singing

Bar 1: Step on R forward in LOD (1), Touch L heel forward (2), Step onto L foot where you touched it (3), Touch R heel forward (4)
Bars 2-16: repeat bar 1 15 more times (32 step heels in total)
Bars 17-20: repeat bar 1 for 8 more step heels.
Bars 21-22: take 8 walking steps into the center.

Part 2: instrumental

Drop hands, down to V position, Women on the ends put free hands on hips
Bar 1: Point R toe forward (1), Leap onto R in place and point L toe forward (2), Jump on both feet at shoulder width, toes pointed in and heels pointed out (3), Jump on both feet together (4)
Bar 2: repeat bar 1
Bar 3: Run forward into the center R (1) L (2). Jump on both feet together (3). pause (4)
Bar 4: Back away from the center R (1), L (2), Jump on both feet together (3), switch weight to L foot (4)

In the various, videos below you'll see different choreographies for this step. The dancers can do it in place. They can travel to the L and R, or in and out. Some dancers can go in and turn. etc. etc.

Part 5: Singing

Bar 1: Cross R over L (1) Step L to L (2). Put weight on both heels, with toes pointed up and to the R (3), Roll on heels to lower toes to the L (4)
Bars 2-12: repeat bar 1, eleven more times (12 in total)

Part 6: Instrumental

Bar 1: Traveling CCW (LOD), run R (1), L (2), jump on both with toes pointed towards center (3), jump onto L in place (4)
Bars 2-12: repeat bar 1, eleven more times (12 in total)

Part 7: Slow A Capella Singing

Bar 1: Moving slowly CW, Rock in on R across L (1), Step on L to L, rocking back (2), Rock in on R across L (3), Step on L to L, rocking back (4)
Bars 2-12: repeat bar 1, eleven more times (24 crossing rocks)

Part 8: Instrumental

Bars 1: Touch R heel forward in LOD(1). Step on R in LOD (2). Touch L heel forward (3). Step on L in LOD (4) [Note that this step is the opposite of part 1, where it was step then heel. This is heel then step]
Bars 2-8: repeat bar 1, seven more times

Part 9: Singing

Get back into front basket hold.
Bar 1: (Rida Steps traveling CW), Cross R over L (1), Step L to L (2), Cross R over L (3), Step to L (4)
Bars 2-7: repeat bar 1, six more times
Bar 8: Cross R over L (1), step L to L (3), Cross R over L (3), Keep weight on R and swing L around to front, ready to go the other way (4)
Bar 9: Repeat bar 1 opposite footwork and direction (traveling CCW)
Bars 10-16: repeat bar 1, seven more times. (Total of 8 CCW ridas)
Bars 17-24: repeat bars 9-16 (8 more CCW ridas)
Bars 25-31: repeat bars 9-15 (6 more CCW ridas)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Andor Czompo, who learned it from a group of men in Gencsapát in Western Hungary. Verbunks are recruiting dances. This one was apparently popular during the 1848 Freedom Fight against the Hapsburgs.

Formation: Men in a circle.
Introduction: 4 bars no action.

Part 1: 

Bars 1-2: take 4 Walking steps in LOD, 2 counts per step. R, L, R, L, thumbs on belt
Bars 3:  Step on R heel forward (1), Close L behind R (&), Step R forward (2), start to circle CW back to starting position. Arms swing to R. Then do the same with the other foot (3, &, 4). Arms swing to the L
Bars 4: repeat bars 3 back to place
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 2:

Bar 1: Facing center, step R to R (1), Close L next to R, clap hands (2), Step L to L (3), Close R next to L, clap hands (4)
Bar 2: Make a complete CW turn, moving slightly to the R, stepping R (1), L (2). Facing center, Jump on both feet at shoulder width (3), Click feet together  (4)
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-2, three more times.

Part 3:

Bar 1: Facing center, step on R into the center (1), Lift L leg high and slap inside of boot by swinging  L hand down from above (2), Step back out of center on L (3), Step on R next to L (4)
Bar 2: Repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2
Bar 5: Hop on L and touch R toe to side (1),  Hop on L, and touch R heel forward (2), Jump backwards on balls of both feet (3), chug forward on flats of both feet (4), arms are out to the sides throughout this step
Bar 6: Repeat bar 5 with opposite footwork
Bars 7-8: Repeat bars 5-6.

Part 4

Bar 1: Clap both hands (1), Hop on R; bring R hand up beside head; twist L knee inwards and L heel out (2), Lift L foot in front and hit L heel with R hand (3), Step on L next to R (4)
Bar 2: Clap (1,&), Clap (ah), Clap (2), Clap (&), Clap (3), pause (&, 4)
Bars 3-8: Repeat bars 1-2, three more times

Part 5

Bars 1-2: Take 4 Walking steps in LOD, 2 counts per step. R, L, R, L, thumbs on belt

Meter: 3/4 (parts 1-3), 4/4 (part 4)
Formation:  Couples facing LOD, M on the L, W on the R and slightly forward. W's R hand is held up, and Man's R holds it behind W's head. Free L hands are on hips.
Introduction: 4 bars, start with main melody

Part 1: 

Footwork is same for M and W.
Bar 1: Rock forward on R (1), rock back on L (2), Rock forward on R (3)
Bar 2: Rock forward on L (1), Rock back on R (2), Rock forward on L (3)
Bars 3-4: M takes 6 walking steps in place, W takes 6 walking steps tracing a CW circle (turning away from partner and ending by stepping under joined R hands
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 2:

Bars 1-2: repeat bars 1-2 of part 1
Bars 3-4: Using 6 walking steps (M dancing in place as the "pivot", W walking forward) make a complete CCW turn in place as a couple (to make this easier, it helps to join L hands in front of man's body, but that's not part of Andor's original notes)
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 of part 2, except end with woman making an extra 1/4 turn, and switching to hold both hands with partner. woman takes extra little step so that she has L foot free for part 3. End with W's back to LOD and man facing LOD.

Part 3:

Bars 1-2: M's footwork is the same as in part 1; W rocks backwards on L (1), forward on R (2), backwards on L (3); Rock backwards on R (1), forward on L (2), rock backwards on R (3)
Bar 3-4: using 6 walking steps woman makes a complete CW turn under M's R, W's L hand
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4, repeat bars 1-3, except woman turns 1 and a 1/2 to end in original position. Woman has to take an extra little step to end with R free.

repeat all of parts 1, 2, 3 again, end in shoulder/waist position with L hips touching

Part 4: (4/4)

Note that dance phrase does not match musical phrase. In Shoulder/Waist position, with L hips touching
Bar 1: Step R (1), L (2) forward rotating CCW. Step on R toe pivoting to face opposite direction (3), lower down on R foot (4)
Bar 2: repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork, turning CW
Bar 3: repeat bar 1
Bars 4-6: Take 10 walking steps  rotating CW (1-10), then Step on L toe pivoting to face opposite direction (11), and lower on L foot (12)
Bars 7-9: repeat bars 4-6 with opposite footwork and direction
Bars 10-18: repeat bars 1-9 with opposite footwork and direction

repeat part 4 until the end of the music
