Kazanlâško Horo - Казанлъшко хоро (Bulgaria)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. The dance was originally taught by Dick Crum. Thanks to Ira Gessel for helping me reconstruct the calls. The dance goes by a variety of names and spellings, including Trakijsko Horo and Kazanlâško Mužsko Horo. See also  the "also called" section below. This dance was also taught by Steve Kotansky. A different version was taught by Petur Iliev. The dance is from the town of Kazanluk.

Music: XOPO LP 2 (Pravo Trakijsko Horo)
Meter: 2/4
Formation: Short lines, belt hold, L over R.
Introduction: Start at the beginning of any musical phrase

Part 1: Pravo

Bar 1: Step R to R (1), Cross L over R (2)
Bar 2: Step on R to R (1), pause (2)
Bar 3: Step on L behind R (1), pause

repeat until leader calls a change.

Part 2: Tropoli/Na Mjasto

Preperatory Count from the previous part: scuff R heel next to L (&)
Bar 1: Facing center, step on R in place (turning body very slightly to face R (1), Scuff L heel next to R (&), Step on L next to R (2), Scuff R heel next to L (&)
Bar 2: Step on R in place (1), Čukče on R, lifting L knee up high (2), stamp L next to R (&)
Bar 3: repeat bar 2 with opposite footwork

This step is done until the leader calls a change, it's also the part that's done between other parts as the "rest" step. 

Part 3: Vodi

Bar 1: Stomp forward to diagonal R on R (1), close L behind R (2) Scuff R forward (&)
Bar 2: Stomp forward on R (1), pause (or čukče on R) (2)
Bar 3: Cross L over R (1), čukče on L (or jump on both feet (2)
Bar 4: Step backwards R (1), L (2)
Bar 5: Step back on R (1) pause (2)
Bar 6: Step back on L (1) pause (3)

After doing the step once, retreat to Tropoli until leader calls a new step

Part 4: Vodi Na Dolu

Bar 1: Stomp forward to diagonal R on R (1), close L behind R (2) Scuff R forward (&)
Bar 2: Stomp forward on R (1), pause (or čukče on R) (2)
Bar 3: Cross L over R (1), čukče on L (or jump on both feet (2)
Bar 4: Step backwards R (1), L (2)
Bar 5: Rock forward on R (1), Jump up on R (2)
Bar 6: Land on both feet into a deep squat (1), straighten up (2)
Bars 7-12: repeat bars 1-6 of Part 3 (Vodi)

Part 5: Daj Go Živo

Bar 1: Run into the center on the R (1), scuff L forward (&), step into the center on L (2), scuff L forward (&)
Bar 2: Step on ball of R in front of L (1) swivel L behind (&), fall on R with the toe in, kicking L out to side with knees together Charleston style (2) pause (&)
Bar 3: Click L closed next to R (1), pause (&), fall on L (2), stamp R next to L (&)

Do part 1 (Tropoli) backing up 

Part 6: Pravo Čukaj

Bar 1: Step on R into the center (1), scuff L heel forward (&), Step L into the center (2), scuff R heel forward (&)
Bar 2: Step forward on R into the center (1), close L behind R (&), Step R forward into center (2), jump up in the air (&)
Bar 3: Land on both feet, with L in front with a bent knee (1) pause (&), pause (2), pause (&)
Bar 4: Straighten up on L, bicycling R Forward (1) stamp R next to L (2), jump on both feet up (&)
Bar 5: Land on both feet, with R in front with a bent knee (1) pause (&2&)
Bar 6: Straighten up on R, bicycling L Forward (1) stamp L next to R (2),

Do part 1 (Tropoli) backing up 

Part 7: Tri Izfârli

Bar 1: Moving into the center, cross R over L (1), Cross L over R (2)
Bar 2: Hop on L, bringing R around in front (1), Step on R across L (2)
Bar 3: Hop on R, bringing L around in front (1),Step on L across R (2)
Bar 4: Stomp on R moving to R, backing out slightly(1), Step on L behind R (2)
Bar 5: Step on R to R, backing out slightly (1), Čukče on R (2), Stamp L next to R (&)
Bar 6: Repeat bar 5, opposite footwork and direction

Part 8: Skokni

Bar 1: Facing center, step on R in place (turning body very slightly to face R (1), Scuff L heel next to R (&), Step on L next to R (2), Scuff R heel next to L (&)
Bar 2: Step on R in place (1), Čukče on R, lifting L knee up high (2), stamp L next to R (&)
Bar 3: Step forward on L (1) chug forward on both feet (2)
Bar 4: Chug back on both feet (1), chug forward on both (2)
Bar 5: Step back on R behind L, turning to face R (2) Step forward on L in place, turning to face center (2)
Bar 6: Čukče on L, Lift R in front (1), Stamp R (2)
Bar 7: Čukče on L, Lift R in front (1), stamp R (2)
Bar 8: Step back on R scissoring L forward (1), step back on L, scissoring R forward (2)
Bar 9: Step on R in place (1), Čukče on R (2), stamp L next to R (&)
Bar 10: Step on L in place (1), stamp R next to L (2)

Part 9: Udri

Bar 1:Facing center, step on R in place (turning body very slightly to face R (1), Scuff L heel next to R (&), Step on L next to R (2), Scuff R heel next to L (&)
Bar 2: Step on R in place (1), turning to face slighlty R of center, čukče on R, lifting L foot up next to calf(2), stamp L next to R (&)
Bar 3: Fall on both feet body pointed slightly to the L (1), pause (2)
Bar 4: Jump in the air off both feet (1), land on both feet (2)
Bars 5-7: repeat bars 2-4
Bars 8-10: repeat bars 2-4
Bars 11-13: repeat bars 2-4

Part 10: Desen Otpred

Bar 1: Step R forward across L (1), stamp L behind R (&), Step back on L behind R (2), stamp R in front (&)
Bar 2: Step R forward across L (1), Hop on R (2), stamp L behind R (&)
Bar 3: Step on L behind R (1), stamp R heel in front (&), hop on L (2), stamp R in front of L (&)

Sequence

The dance is called by the leader. Tropoli is done between each step.
