Tuvak (Turkey)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Bora Özkök, who learned it from Mustafa Hamzaoglu in 1982. The dance was brought to Turkey by people from Crimea. The name is probably a variant of the word duvak 'veil'.

Music: Solen '83, Bora Özkök and the Sultans
Meter: 6/8,  (123)(456), counted as two beats (1)(2) here.
Formation: Start in lines of no more than seven couples. M stand on the R of the W. Arms start down in close V position (Gluglu)
Introduction: 2 bars, start with the zurna.

Part 1:

Bar 1: Facing center step on ball of R to R (1), fall on flat of L crossed in front of L (2)
Bars 2-20: repeat bar 1, nineteen more times (20 in total)

Part 2:

Bars 1-14: using the footwork of part 1, continue moving to the R facing center, but leader takes a bigger step to the R and swings his L hand forward and up over partner's head to land on her shoulder, her free hand comes up to his L shoulder. Then the first woman repeats this, then the next man, etc. down the line. Each person takes 1 bar to get into shoulder hold.

Part 3:

Bar 1: Men (or odd numbered dancers), step into the center on R foot, turning 1/2 way CW to face out (1), step on L to L (2). Form a staggered line with men on the inside facing out, W on the outside, hands are up in Y position.  W continue the step from part 1.
Bars 2-6: W continue the footwork from part 1, Men step on R behind L (1), step on L to L (2), i.e. continue in LOD.
Bar 7: M step out on R foot turning CW to face in, W step in on R foot turning 1/2 way clockwise to face out (i.e. exchange positions). You're still in a wavy line (1). M steps behind on L, W step on on L to L (2)
Bars 8-12: repeat bars 2-6, except with W doing the behind step on the R and M stepping on R to R to start.

Part 4:

Bar 1: M continue with step of part 1, W turn CW out to face center, end with all facing center, hands up in Y position.
Bars 2-12: repeat footwork of part 1, slowly lowering arms down to close V position.

Part 5:

Repeat part 3, except women go in first, then men go in second

Oberek Na Lewo (Poland)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Ada Dziewanowska and choreographed by Jás Dziewanoski. There is a different version was taught by Jacek Marek. Obereks are spinning dances, and Na Lewo means "to the left".

Music: ZM-40591 "Tańce Ludowe Z Polski"
Meter: 3/8
Formation: Couples in a circle, in ballroom hold but facing LOD (inside hips touching) to start.
Introduction: 4 bars, no action

Footwork


I =  inside = M's R, W's L
O = outside = M's L , W's R

Oberek Step: Leap onto O (1), step on ball of I foot next to O (2), step onto I (3); also done with the opposite footwork:

Kneels (men only): Leap onto R, with a deep knee bend, left foot goes back with top of foot to floor, knee to floor (1,2), straighten up (3); also done with the opposite footwork.

Hołubczyki (click steps): 
Man's step:making a complete 1/2 CW turnBar 1: Step R In LOD (1), Lift L out to the side, click feet in the air (2), land on R (3). Bar 2: Step L (1), R (2), L (3)

The Dance

Part 1 Bieg Dookoła Sali (running)

Bar 1: Run forward in LOD  I (1), O (2), I (3) 
Bar 2: repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork
Bars 3-6: repeat bars 1-2 two more times
Bar 8: Stomp O (1), I (2), making a 1/2 CW turn as a couple, so man is on the outside and W is on the inside
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8, except traveling in RLOD and starting with the opposite foot

Part 2: Obroty z Przyklekami (Oberek and kneels)

Open up so, both facing center. M's R hand is on W's R hip, and W's L hand is tucked under M's bicep (support position). Free hands are on hips. 
Bars 1-12: using 12 Oberek steps, starting with I foot. Spin CW in place, M dances forward, W backs up. 
Bars 12-16: W continues to do 4 Oberek steps backing up. M does 4 kneels (R, L, R, L), moving forward.

Part 3: Transition

Bars 1-4: Do 4 Oberek steps, starting with I foot, getting into Ballroom position, with O shoulder towards LOD. 

Part 4: Hołubczyki (Clicks)

Bars 1-2: do 1 complete Holubczyki step turning 1/2 way CW, and moving forward in LOD. 
Bars 3-16: repeat bars 1-2, seven more times.

Part 5: Skoki Chłopców (Men Leap high)

Open up so, both facing center. M's R hand is on W's R hip, and W's L hand is tucked under M's bicep (support position). Free hands are on hips. 
Bars 1-2: do 2 Oberek steps, M moving foward, W backing up. Start I foot.
Bars 3-4:  W does two Oberek step backing up. M does Skoki Chłopców
Bars 5-16: repeat bars 1-4, three more times.

Part 6: Transition 2


Bars 1-4: repeat bars 1-4 of part 3

Part 7: Figura Niesiona

M has hands on W's hips, W has hands on M's shoulders, M faces LOD, W has back to LOD.
Bar 1-7: M runs forward, W runs backwards,  IOI, OIO, IOI, OIO, IOI, OIO, IOI
Bar 8: Stomp O (1), I (2,3)
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8 with opposite footwork and direction (M backing up, W dance forward)

Part 8: Przykleki Chłopców

Bars 1-7: Drop hands and dance solo. M does 7 kneels, starting with I foot in place. He claps on each kneel.  W does 7 oberek steps spinning in place CW, 1 turn per step. 
Bar 8: Jump on both feet, hold.
Bars 9-10: In ballroom position, do two oberek steps, turning  moving forward in LOD
Bars 12-16: open up in "support" position, do 4 spinning oberek steps, M forward, W backwards, as Part 2

Part 9: Zawijany

Bars 1-2: M do a Zawijany step. W back, up with two oberek steps
Bars 3-4: Both do 2 oberek steps continuing to spin CW, M moves forward, W backs up.
Bars 5-16: repeat bars 1-4, three more times, W has to drop last step so that she has L foot free on the last count of Bar 16.

Part 10: Na Talarku


Get into shoulder-waist position, and rotate in place CW
Bar 1: Step L to L (1), close R next to L (2), Step L to L (3)
Bar 2:  Close R next to L (1), Step L to L (2), Close R next to L (3)
Bars 3-6: repeat bars 1-2, two more times
Bar 7: repeat bar 1
Bar 8: Stomp R (1), L (2), push free hands up in the air.

(Man can lift woman in the air for a more spectacular ending)

Jangwa (Zimbabwe)

This dance is from the Manyika Tribe, who are of the Shona people of Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia).  Jangwa is a style of choral music of this group, although the recording for this particular dance has no singing. The dance was originally taught by Abraham Dumisani Mararie. Let's dance magazine from 1974 reports that Jennie Margolis taught the dance at the 5th Aman Institute in Los Angeles.

Meter: 4/4
Formation: Individuals facing the music.
Introduction: 4 bars, no action. Start with slightly deeper drum beat.

Part 1: Kicks

Bar 1: Kick R foot high, L arms swings across body (1), Step back in place on R, L arm swings across body (2), Touch L toe backwards and bend over at the waist, L arm swings across body (3), Step forward in place on L, R arm swings across in front of body (4).
Bars 2-12: repeat bar 1 of part 1., eleven more times.

Part 2: Twists

Bar 1. Lift R knee up and across body, twisting body to the R, raising R hand up across body and tucking head down (1), Step back in place on R, L arm swings across body (2), Touch L toe backwards and bend over at the waist, L arm swings across body (3), Step forward in place on L, R arm swings across in front of body (4).
Bars 2-12: repeat bar 1 of part 2, eleven more times.

Part 3: Hips

Bar 1: Shift so that ball of R foot is slightly forward and weight is mainly on the L, thrust R hip forward and back, hands do an inward circular motion (out to sides, down and then up in front of body) (1),  repeat the motion of count 1 (2), Step on R in place, both hands swing to the R, palms down (3) Step on L in place, hands swing back to L (4)
Bars 2-12: repeat bar 1 of part 3, eleven more times

Part 4: Back arching

Bar 1: repeat counts 1 & 2 of bar 1, part 3 (1,2), bend knees, and throw hands up in the air (3). Bend over at the waist, slapping knees with both hands (4)
Bar 2: Stay bent over, keeping hands on knees, Round back (&), arch back (1), round back (&), arch back (2), round back (&), arch back (3), round back (&), arch back (4)
Bars 3-12: repeat bars 1-2 of part 4, five more times.

Part 5: Slow sways

Bar 1: Sway on R to R, leading with R hip and swinging hands to the R (1,2), Sway on L to L, leading with L hip, and swinging hands to the L (3,4)
Bar 2: Cross R over L, turning to face RLOD, bend over at waist and cover eyes with left forearm (1), Step on L in place, straightening up (2), step R (3), L (4) in place.
Bars 3-12: repeat bars 1-2 of part 5, five more times

Part 6: draw circle

Bar 1: repeat bar 1 of part 5
Bar 2:  Cross R over L, turning to face RLOD, bend over at waist and cover eyes with left forearm (1), Step on L in place, straightening up (2), draw R toe around in a CW circle to close next to L, no weight (3,4)
Bars 3-12: repeat bars 1-2 of part 6, five more times

Part 7: repeat kicks

Bars 1-13: repeat bar 1 of part 1, thirteen times

Raqs-E Churpi - رقص چورپی (Iran)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught in the US by Anthony Shay, who learned it in Iran in the 1970s. He says it is commonly done by the Qashqa'i, Bakhtiari, Lori, and Khamseh tribes in the southwest of the Iran. Raqs/Raghs means "dance" in Persian. Churpi is a dialect word that is equivalent to standard Persian Chubi/Chupi (رقص چوبی) which means "wood" or "stick" from the Turkish "Çırpı". The dance was traditionally done with sticks. But the version described here uses scarves instead of sticks.

Meter: 2/4
Formation: Solo dancers of either gender standing in circle or randomly around the room. Each dancer holds a scarf in each hand (which was probably originally a stick), hands are held up as if in W position.
Introduction: Start with main melody (on Zurna). Traditionally the dance would be leader called, but this version is counted out to fit the music.

Part 1

Bar 1: Step on R to R (1), Close L next to R with weight (&), Step R to R (2), close L next to L, with weight (&). Hands flick scarves up on counts (1) and (2) and down on (&) counts.
Bars 2-7: repeat bar 1, six more times.
Bar 8: Step on R to R (1), Close L next to R with weight (&), jump on both feet turning to face LOD (2), pause (&)

Part 2

Bar 1: Facing and moving in LOD, step R (1), close L behind R (&), Step on R in LOD (2). Arms sway from over head to the R.
Bar 2: repeat bar 1, but with opposite footwork and swaying arms over the head to the L
Bars 3-8: repeat bars 1-2, three more times

Part 3

Bar 1: Spinning CW in place with hands out to the sides, do a buzz step turn (Step R in place (1), push on ball of L foot (&), step on R in place (2), Push on ball of L foot (&)
Bars 2-4: repeat bar 1, three more times. Skip last push on the the last count of bar so that L foot is free.

Parts 4-5

repeat parts 2-3, with opposite footwork, traveling in RLOD and spinning CCW

Part 6

Bar 1: facing center, step R into the center, arms swing forward (1) Step on L into the center, arms start to swing back (2)
Bar 2: Step on R into the center, arms are back (1), Hop on R, arms swing forward and up (2)
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork and backing up, arms swing back to start.
Bars 5-16: repeat bars 1-4, three more times

Part 7

Bar 1: facing LOD, step on R forward (1), hop on R, lifting L in front. L arm sweeps low in front of body, while R arm is raised in the air (2)
Bar 2: repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork, R arm sweeps low in front of body, with L arm raised.
Bars 3-8: repeat bars 1-2, three more times

Part 8

repeat part 3

Parts 9-10

repeat parts 7-8 with opposite footwork, armwork and direction

Part 11

Bars 1-3: facing center, repeat the footwork of bars 1-3 of part 7 (three step hops into the center)
Bar 4: Drop down on R knee (1) Pause (2)
Bar 5: Push R shoulder forward (1), push L shoulder forward and R back (2)
Bars 6-7: repeat bar 5, two more times
Bar 8: Rise up from kneeling position (1), Jump on both feet astride, shout "Hey", hands come up above head (2)
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8 but facing out of the center (turn on first step of bar 9)
Bars 17-32: repeat bars 1-16

Part 12

Bars 1-2: Making a complete CW turn moving slightly into the center, step R (1), L (2), R (1). Jump on both feet to stop turn (2). L arm goes up in the air in front of the body the (1) counts, R hand goes up on the (2) counts.
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2, with opposite footwork and turning CCW and moving slightly out of the center
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 13

repeat part 1. On final jump on both feet, shout "Hey" and put hands in the air.

Music: International Record S 705,"I Give Up"
Meter: 4/4 and 2/4
Formation: Couples, arranged in two concentric open circles. Everyone facing into the center. Men are in a center line with hands on hips. Women are on the outside, standing to the R and back of their partner. They have hands forward on the shoulders of the M and his neighbor.
Introduction: None

Part 1

Bar 1: Step R to R (1). Close L next to R with weight (2). Step R to R (3). Close L next to R with weight (4)
Bars 2-3: repeat bar 1, two more times.
Bar 4: Turning 1/2 way CW, Click R next to L with weight (1), Click L next to R, with W (2), click R next to L with weight (3), pause (4). In this step M turn in place. W stomp into the center, so they end up slightly behind their partner again (essentially in the same formation as the starting position, but facing out).
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork, starting facing out.
Bars 9-12: repeat bars 1-4, except don't turn on bar 4. Just do it in place facing center. W does not take weight on the final count, so that her R foot is free.

Part 2

Bar 1: M pulls his R shoulder back, stepping L (1), R (2), W steps R (1), L (2), moving forward next to partner. Holding nearing hand (M's R, W's L), facing partner, jump on both feet apart at shoulder width (3). Jump on both feet together (4).
Bar 2: Arm swings forward, and going back to back step M's L, W's R (1), Step forward in LOD on M's R, W's L (2). Turning to face partner, jump on both feet apart at shoulder width, swinging arms back (3), Jump on both feet together (4).
Bars 3-4: repeat bar 2, two more times.

Part 3

In bars 1-3, the couple rotates CW to the L. 
Bar 1. Move into shoulder-waist position (facing partner, M's hands on W's waist, W's hands resting on M's shoulders), both hop on L, lifting R knee up, R heel in (1). Hop on L, R heel swinging out (2). Step on R next to L (3). Step on L next to R (&). Step on R next to L (4).
Bar 2: Repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork
Bar 3: Repeat bar 1.
Bar 4: Open up to face the center, forming a closed circle in shoulder hold, with W on the right, W hops on R touching L across R. M hops on L touching R across  L (1). Everyone jumps on both feet at shoulder width (2). Jump on both feet together (3). Pause (4)

Part 4

In a closed circle, with shoulder hold
Bar 1: Step on R to R (1). Step on L behind R (2), Step on R to R (3). Čukče on R, while lifting L up (4)
Bar 2: Repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork and direction
Bars 3-4: Repeat bars 1-2  

Part 5

In a closed circle, hands dropping to V position, and dancing in place, use the footwork of part 3 but facing center. 

Part 6

Bar 1: W put hands on hips, rolling across in front partner and switching sides with partner, step L (1), R (2), L (3), stamp R next to L (4). M puts R hand on W's back and pushes her across him catching her with his L hand. He steps R (1), L (2), R (3) to right side, the stamps L. 
Bar 2: Repeat bar 1, with opposite footwork and direction, rolling back to original side. 
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2, except on the last count M takes weight on R foot, to leave the L foot free for part 7

Bar 7: 

In a closed (or open circle) with hands down in V position
Bar 1: Everyone step L to L (1), Close R next to L no weight (2), Step R to R (3). Close R next to L no weight (4)
Bar 2: Step L to L (1), Close R next to L with weight (2), Step L to L (3), Close R next to L, no weight (4)
Bars 3-4: Repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork and direction
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 8

Bars 1-2: repeat bars 1-2 of part 2
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 of part 3, making a complete turn.
Bars 5-6: repeat bars 1-2

Part 13:

Get in shoulder-waist position, but standing side by side, R-shoulder to R-shoulder.Bar 1: Down beat rida step: swinging CW with partner, cross R over L (1). Step L to L (2). Cross R over L (3). Step L to L (4)Bars 2-4: repeat bar 1, three more times

Part 14:

Music switches to a fast 2/4 time. Face partner, put hands on hips

upbeat: extend M's R, W's L to side
Bar 1: Step on M's R, W's L in place (1), Step on M's L, W's R next to other foot (&), Step on M's R, W's L in place (2). Kick M's L and W's R to side
Bar 2: repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork
Bars 3-6: repeat bars 1-2, two more times
Bar 7: Hop on M's L, W's R, Touching M's R toe and W's L across in front of the other foot (1), 
Bar 8: Jump on both feet at shoulder's width (1), pause (2)

Part 15:

During this step, you make a complete turn in place, 1/2 way per bar. 
Bar 1: take inside hand and step on M's R and W's L across in front of the other foot, swinging hands forward and up (1), Hop on M's R, W's L, while turning 1/2 way (M CCW, W CW) to face out, Drop hands (2)
Bar 2: Step on M's L, W's R in place, hands on hips (1), hop on M's L, W's R, completing M's CCW turn and W's CW turn to face partner (2)
Bar 3: Hop on M's L, W's R, Touching M's R toe and W's L across in front of the other foot (1), 
Bar 4: Jump on both feet at shoulder's width (1), pause (2)
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 16:

Bars 1-4: Face LOD, hands held with partner, back up with 8 skipping steps backing up in RLOD, starting by stepping backwards on R
Bars 5-8: do 4 leaping pas de basques moving forward.
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-4, two more times (16 skipping step backing up)

Part 17

Bar 1: Man turn to face LOD, W turns to face RLOD, M travels to outside. W travels to the inside. Hop on L (1)  Step R to R (2), Close L next to R (3). Hands are on hips
Bars 2-3: repeat bar 1, two more times.
Bar 4: Step R (1), L (&), R (2) in place 
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork and direction

Part 18

Bar 1: Facing partner with arms extended forward, Rock forward on R (1) pause (2)
Bar 2: Rock back on L (1), pause (2)
Bar 3: Get in shoulder-waist position, R shoulder to R shoulder. Turning with partner CW, Step R (1), L (2) forward.
Bars 4-7: repeat bar 3, four more times
Bar 8: Man takes 2 steps, R, L in place.  W breaks from handhold and spins solo with two steps R (1), L (2) to end facing CCW. 

Part 19

Everyone is facing CCW (LOD). M is behind W and slightly to the R, his L hand on her L hip. Holding her R hand in his to the side. 
Bar 1: Hop on L (1)  Step R to R (2), Close L next to R (3). Hands are on hips
Bars 2-3: repeat bar 1, two more times.
Bar 4: Step R (1), L (&), R (2) in place 
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork and direction, R hand on W's R hip.

Part 20: 

Repeat part 18

Part 21: Ending

Bar 1: W rolls out away from man holding W's L in M's R
Bar 2: W rolls back in to "sweetheart" position. M raise W hand and shout Csuhaj!

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Agostin Lanyi and Andor Czompo.  Ritka means "slow" in the context of dancing. Legenyes means "Lad's dance".  The dance is from the the Mezőseg region.

Formation: Line of Men, standing solo.
Introduction: 8 bars no action

Part 1

Bar 1: Hop on L, hooking R in front (1). Step on R to R (2).
Bar 2: Step on L behind R (1). Rock forward on R (2)
Bar 3: Hop on R, touching L heel forward (1),  Jump on both feet apart at shoulder width (2)
Bar 4: Jump on balls of both feet together (1), fall on flat of both feet (2)
Bar 5: Leap off of R, turning to face L, clap hands (1), land on L, hitting R heel with R hand out to the side (&) Cross R over L (2), step L to L (&)
Bar 6: Touch R heel forward  (1), jump onto both feet at shoulder width (2)
Bar 7: Jump onto balls of both feet, together (1), Jump onto both feet at shoulder width (2)
Bar 8: repeat bar 4
Bars 9-12: repeat bars 5-8 with opposite footwork and direction
Bar 13: Leap off of R, turning to face L, clap hands (1), land on L, hitting R heel with R hand out to the side (&), Step on R, with feet a shoulder's width, bend over (2), hit L shin with L hand (&)
Bar 14: Hit R shin with R hand (1), Hit L shin with L hand (&). Straighten up with R foot out to side (2)
Bar 15: Click R closed against left (1), pause (2)
Bar 16: Pause (1), fall on both feet forward (2)

Part 2

Bar 1: Hop on L, tapping R toe diagonally back, crossed behind L (1), Hop on L again this time tap R  straight back (2)
Bar 2: Hop on L, kicking L forward low (1), Leap on R crossing it in front of L (2)
Bar 3: Hop on R, kicking L out to side, hit L foot with L hand (1). Hop on R, touch L next to R on ground (2)
Bar 4: Hop on R, Lifting L in front and hit L shin with L hand (1), Jump on both feet together (2)
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4
Bar 9: Leap on L in place, lifting R in front, hit R shin with R hand (1), Leap on R in place lifting L in front, hit L shin with L hand (2)
Bar 10: Step on L in place (1), Hit L thigh with L hand, lifting R up (&), Hit R shit with R hand (2)
Bar 11-12: repeat bars 9-10, except hop on L on count 1 of bar 11.
Bars 13-16: Turning to face L, clap hands (1), fall on L, hitting R heel with R hand out to the side (&), Step on R, with feet a shoulder's width, bend over (2), hit L shin with L hand (&)

Krakowiak (Poland)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. The Krakowiak is from Krakow. The dance is typically done as a stage dance. There are many many many different choreographies all of which use different steps in different orders. This version is the version that Bill and Karen Faust taught.

Music: Victor 25-0977
Meter: 2/4
Formation: Couples in circle. M on the inside, facing partner. Open ballroom position (M's R on W"s waist, L hand up high. W's L on M's R shoulder, R hand holds skirt or also up high.
Introduction: Three beats, no action, then start with main melody.

I = Inside = M's R, W's L
O = Outside = M's L, W's R

Part 1: Sashay

Bar 1: Step on O to O (1), close I next to O (&), Step on O to O (2), close I next to O (&)
Bars 2-7: repeat bar 1, six more times
Bar 8: Step on O to O (1), close I next to O (&), Jump on both feet (2), pause (&)

Part 2: Spin

Bars 1-8: Making a 1/2 turn CCW. M backing up. W dancing forward. Spin using 8 hop step steps (Hop on I (1), Step on O (&), Step on I (2))

Part 3: Polka

Bars 1-8: Using 8 turning (CW) polka steps (start by stepping on O), dance in a CCW direction around

Part 4 Pas-de-basque and clicks

Bar 1-4: Facing center, using 4 pas-de-basque steps (O, I, O, I), dance away from partner, then towards partner, away, together. Free hand sweeps outwards when pas-de-basque to O, and inwards when stepping on I
Bar 5: Hop on I and click O foot in air, while moving into the center, Hop on I and click O foot in the air.
Bar 6: Pas de basque into the center on the O foot
Bars 7-8: repeat bars 5-6 dancing away from the center, with the opposite footwork, I hand is in the air, hold O hand with partner
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8

Part 5: Slide in and out

Bar 1: Slide onto O foot into the center  (1) , close I next to O (&), Slide onto O foot into the center (1), close I next to O (&)
Bar 2: repeat bar 1
Bar 3: repeat bar 1
Bar 4: Slide onto O foot into the center  (1) , close I next to O (&) Jump on both feet (2) pause (&)
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork, sliding away from the center. 

Part 6: Brush Step

During this step both M and W do the same footwork.  Both start with the R foot free, which you lift after the final jump in part 5
Bar 1: Brush R foot forward (1), Brush R foot back (2)
Bar 2: Step on R in place (1), Step on L next to R (&), Step on R in place (2)
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4

Part 7: Swing

As in part 6, both M and W start this step with R foot free. Facing partner, take R hand in R hand and L hand in L hand crossed between partners. 
Bars 1-4: Swing around with partner CCW, using a sashay step (slip step), Starting with R foot. End with a jump on both feet on last count .
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork turning CW.

Bar 8: Box Step

Bar 1: Drop hands with partner. Travel to your own Right, with two hops on the L, clicking R heel in air on each hop.
Bar 2: Step R (1), L (&), R (2), in place turning a 1/4 to face own right side.
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork, moving to own L passing back to back with partner, end facing partner's side, having made another 1/4 turn.  R arm is in air.
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4 back to place. Man has to take an extra step so that his L is free for part 9.

Part 11: Polka

Repeat Part 3, except Roll Women out CW on last bar.  End facing center with O hand up in the air.

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Taught in the US by Andor Czompo. This is a recruiting dance from Kapuvar. Czompo's version has a women's part, which isn't in most versions of this dance. Other versions introduced by Alice Reisz and Agostin Lanyi (which Czompo also taught).

Formation: Traditionally it's a line of men (only). This version has an inner circle of women in a front basket (Czompo's notes say back basket), and an outer circle of men solo, with hands on hips.
Introduction: Wait through 3 chords, and start with main melody.

Men's dance

Part 1

Bars 1-3: Moving in a CW direction, walk 6 slow walking steps, starting with R foot. 2 counts per step.
Bar 4: Click R heel closed next to L, with weight (1), Click L heel closed next to R, with weight (2), Click R heel closed next to L, with weight (3), fall onto L back in place, kicking R foot forward (4)
Bars 5-16: repeat bars 1-4, three more times.

Part 2

Bar 1: Facing center, bounce on heels 3 times. Hold hands up in Y position. Snap on each count (1,2,3) pause (4)
Bars 2-3: repeat bar 1, three more times.
Bar 5: Leap onto R, making a 1/2 turn CCW (Pull L shoulder back) to face out (1). Jump on both feet at shoulder width. Hands come to chest (2). Close feet together, arms shoot out to Y position again (3), pause (4)
Bar 6: Repeat bar 5, turning back to face center
Bars 7-8: repeat bars 5-6
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8

Part 3

Bar 1  Arms are in Y position. Hop on L, Lift R up with R heel in (1), Hop on L, push R heel outwards to the R (2), Step on R next to L (3) pause (4)
Bar 2: repeat bar 2 with opposite footwork
Bar 3: Bounce on heels 3 times. Hold hands up in Y position. Snap on each count (1,2,3). Pause (4)
Bar 4: Click R heel closed next to L, with weight (1). Click L heel closed next to R, with weight (2). Click R heel closed next to L, no weight (3). Pause (4) 
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4
Bar 9: Hop on L, kicking R foot forward straight. Slap R shin with R hand (1). Leap onto R, kicking L out to side with L foot facing back (2). Click L next to R, no weight (3). Fall on L (4)
Bars 1-16: repeat bar 9, seven more times

Repeat the entire from the beginning two more times. 

Women's dance

Part 1

Bar 1: Step on R to R (1). Step on L behind R (2). Step on R to R (3). Hop on R (4)

Timonya refers to a Cossack chief, also known as Timothy.  There is also a dance for trios by this name taught by Alexandru David and several stage choreographies. This is the version taught by Joukowsky. Thanks to Martha Awdziewicz for corrections to these notes.

Part 1: Chorus Step

Bar 1: in LOD walk R (1), L (2)
Bar 2: repeat bar 1
Bar 3: Step on R in LOD (1), Scuff L through with no weight (2)
Bars 4-5: repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork, still moving LOD
Bar 6: stomp  L (1), R (&), L (2)

Part 2: In and out

Bars 1-6: repeat bars 1-6 of part 1, except moving into the center. Arms raise forward as you're going in

Part 4: Women Snake

Men stand in place throughout this step, with hands behind back, and R foot slightly forward, flex knees on count 2 of each bar and straighten on each count 1. 
Bars 1-12: using 24 walking steps starting with the R foot. Woman dances in front of her partner, behind the next man to his left, and then in front of around the next man to the L after that. Then she returns back to place, dancing behind the line of men.

Part 5: Chorus

Part 6: Brush Step

Women:
Bars 1-4: Starting with the R foot take 8 walking steps into the center, turning at the end to face partner.
Bar 5: Stomp on R next to L (1), Brush L forward (2)

Bar 7: Step L (1), R (2) in place
Bar 8: Step L in place and present R heel forward
Bars 9-16: Stand still and watch M perform their action

Men: 
Bars 1-8: stand still and watch W perform their action

(this is the way Karen Faust does it):

Bars 7-9: Take 6 walking steps back towards out side of circle (or take 5 walking steps and a stamp)
Bars 10-12: Take 6 walking step in LOD to get back to partner.

The way other notes say to do it:
Bars 1-3: 6 walking steps, starting R,  into the center on the R diagonal 
Bars 4-6: 5 walking steps, starting R, in RLOD. Followed by a Stamp of L foot, while turning 1/2 CCW to face LOD.
Bars 7-8: retrace distance travelled on bars 4-6, including stamp
Bars 9-12: Six walking steps starting R to get back to partner.

Men:
Bar 1: Squat down on both feet hands crossed in front of crotch 
Bar 2: Jump up onto R foot, with L heel extended, R arm in air, L arm out to side
Bar 3: pause
Bars 4-6: repeat bars 1-3, with opposite footwork
Bars 7-12: repeat bars 1-6

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught in the US by Madelynne Greene in the 1960s. Mardelynne reconstructed this dance from a book of Ukrainian dances that was translated for her by Dick Crum.

Music: Memories of Ukrainia COL LP202
Meter: 2/4
Formation: Trios, typically of two women and 1 man. Trios face LOD. Trios are like spokes of a wheel. Start in a front basket hold.
Introduction: None

Part 1: Run forward and spin

Bars 1-10: Using 123s (RLR, LRL, RLR etc), Run forward
Bars 11-16: Using 123s, wheel the trio around CCW, with M acting as the pivot and R-hand W dancing forward and L-hand W backing up. End facing center of the circle

Part 2: In and Out

Bars 1-7: Dance 7 pas de basques into the center
Bar 8: M stamps 3 times (1,&,2), man turns W under his arms, R-hand W turns CCW, L-hand woman turns clockwise. End with women having hands on hips, and M with his hands around their backs.
Bar 9: backing away from center, Kick R heel forward (1), then leap on R and kick L forward.
Bars 10-15: repeat bar 9, six more times (leaping onto L on count 1)
Bar 16: Stomp L (1), R (&), L (2)

Part 3: Kolopalochka, then Prysiadka

For bars 1-8 Man stands in place, while women advance to the center
Bar 1:  Facing each other, W touch R toe next to L (1), then put R heel forward (2). Arms do a sweeping movement outwards
Bar 2: Step R (1), L (&), R (2) moving forward into the center and away from each other. Arms go on hips
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2, but with opposite footwork and turning towards each other (still moving in though)
Bar 5-8: repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-15: Turning away women circle back to M. R-hand L goes CW, L-hand lady goes CCW. Use 7 pas-de-basques steps to get there. M meanwhile, does 7 Prysiadka Steps (Squat, then kick R forward, squat then kick L forward etc.
Bar 16: M does one more Prysiadka step while W spin in place. R-hand W spins CCW, L-hand W spins CW.

Part 4: Skipping, then Women in again

Bars 1-8: Backing up slightly do 16 skips (Hop L (&), step R (1), hop R (&), Step L (2), etc.)
Bars 9-16: Women use 8 pas-de-basques to dance into the center, end facing each other .

Part 5: Women pulling, then back up

Bar 1: Women facing each, holding both hands, pas-de-basque R, pulling R arm back so turning to face CCW
Bar 2: repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork, pulling L arm back to face CW
Bar 3: repeat bar 1
Bar 4: Stomp L (1), R (&), L (2) in place
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-16: Using 16 skipping steps, back up towards M, but cross over as backing up, L-hand W goes behind R-hand woman

Part 6: Duck-walk and Push Steps

Women:
Bars 1-7: Women do 14 push step (fall on R to R (1), push off on L (&), fall on R (2), push off on L (&). New R hand woman starts R foot and leads with R shoulder into the center. New L-hand woman needs to do a quick shift of weight before doing this step and leads with L shoulder into the center, starting with L foot)
Bar 8: new R-hand W stomp R (1), L (&), R (2) in place, L hand woman stomps LRL
Bars 9-16: Repeat bars 1-8, with opposite footwork back to place.

Men:
Bars 1-8: Using 16 "duckwalks" (walk forward while in a squated position, foot stepping forward has to come out and around to make this work), follow new R-hand woman into the center
Bars 9-16: Using 16 "duckwalks", follow new L-handwoman back to edge of the circle

Part 7: Povzunets

Man stays down in squat position, Women turn to face center and take nearer hands above man's head. and then use their outside hands to hold onto the man's hands.
Bars 1-8; M does Povzunets (In a squat position kick R forward (1) Kick L forward, obviously switching weight to R (2) etc) for 8 bars, moving into the center. Women accompany him doing 8 pas-de-basques
Bars 9-16: New L-hand woman drops hand briefly and turns 1/2 CW to face back. She gives L hand to other woman above Man's Head and take M's R hand in her own. Man continues to do povzunets steps in place rotating CCW. While women run forward (CCW) in a circle around him. Do one complete rotation.

Part 8: Push steps Crossing

Bars 1-4: Man stands up and steps back. L-hand W turns to face center. L-hand W and R-hand W, exchange places in front of M, using the push steps and stamps in bars 5-8 of part 6. L-hand W falls on R to start, L-hand lady falls on L, you may have to fudge your weight to get onto the correct foot.  R-hand lady passes in front. Arms come forward and out and go onto hips on the stamps.
Bars 5-8: Repeat back to place with opposite footwork
Bars 9-12: All face center, take hands as in beginning of the dance (front basket), using 4 pas-de-basques run forward into center and then swinging around to face original LOD.
Bars 13-16: Drop hands with L-hand W. M & R-hand W continue forward. L-hand W spins in place CCW.

Part 9: Click steps 

Man and new R-hand W: face each other and hold L hand in L hand, Extend R hand in air.
Bar 1: Hop on L and click R heel in air to R (1), hop on L and click R heel in air to R (2)
Bar 2: Step R (1), L (&), R (2) in place
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2, with opposite footwork and direction
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-16: Separate and using eight 123s, M dances circles CW out of the center, W starts to circle CW into the center

L-hand W:
Bars 1-8: use eight 123s (RLR, LRL, RLR etc), to dance in LOD, but out of the circle.
Bars 9-16: Using the click step described in bars 1-2 just above, L-hand W dances into the center.

Part 10: Coffee Grinder

Bars 1-8: M dance towards center, W pull R shoulder back and dance towards back, all with 8 pas-de-basques starting R foot. W pull R shoulder back on last pas de basque to face center.
Bars 9-16: M does "coffee grinder step (Squat on L foot, extend R out straight to R, support with both hands on floor in front, circle R foot CW around keeping it straight, lifting L hand, R hand and L foot in turn to get them out of the way, 1 circle per bar). W use  eight 123s to run around M. L-hand W circles CW on the inside. R-hand W circles CCW on the outside.

Part 11: Exit

Bars 1-8: repeat bars 1-8 of part 1, circling around so that you're facing LOD
Bars 9-16, retaining hands with M, but dropping hands with other W, W flip out so that their backs are towards LOD (i.e., they're facing RLOD), they back up with 8 pas de basques, dragging M off stage. M squats, and does 8 pozvunets steps forward off stage, being dragged by the W.
