    Blow, wind, blow
    Blow, blow, spring wind,
Bring back green leaves to the trees in the forest
    melt the white snow.

    Melt the white snow,
    Open the road to Drama,
I want to go to Drama.

I want to go to Drama,
My sweetheart is lying ill there–
[I want] to take him something that he will enjoy eating.

[I want] to take him a gift of fruit -
yellow quince on a branch with leaves,
and ripe grapes on a vine.

Stoyan said quietly to his mother,
    “Oh, my dear, wise mother,
Did you hear, did you understand
That my only love is getting married?

She got engaged – but I’m still burning with love for her.
She is getting married – I have no future!”
    Stoyan’s wise mother
    said wisely to him:

“Let her get engaged, let her get married,
Now young girls are growing up,
Young girls – thin and tall,
    fair, pretty, blonde, and happy.”

Important note: We screwed up the sequence when we did the dance in this video. During the taxim, we did the part 1 six times instead of 5. This meant we ended the dance in the middle of part 2.

Why is it getting white up there on Belasitsa mountain? Is it white snow or swans?
It’s neither white snow nor swans, rather it is a shelter and under it is Stoyan,
Oy oy, young Stoyan is lying there ill and beside him is his sister.
Oy oy, Stoyan said to his sister, Yana, belovèd sister,
Please go, Yana, bring me water from the Danube river to cure, belovèd sister, my deep wounds.
Cut your little finger, let the blood run, mark stones and trees with it, so you can find your way back.
Oy, oy, Yana listened to her brother and made a cut in her finger
Oy oy, she took water from the Danube river and started on her way back.
When Yana got to the forest, dew had fallen that washed away her blood marks from the stones and the trees. The sister couldn’t find the path back to her brother Stoyan then Yana sadly begged God:
“O my dear God, turn me into a bird – a cuckoo bird so I can fly up high and find my dear brother.

Što Mi E Milo - Harvey's SQQ version (Macedonia)

Posted on October 27, 2016 by muo

Što Mi E Milo (Harvey's SQQ version)
    (Macedonia)

    These notes ©2014, Andrew Carnie.

This dance is a bit of a mystery to me. I haven't been able to find a printed source for this. We learned it from Harvey Gardner, who learned it in Santa Fe from Scott Lowry. It has the feel of a North American IFD choreography to it, but I have no clue if that's true. Generally speaking when I've danced in other places people simply do a Lesnoto to this music. There is an entirely different IFD dance choreographed to this same tune by Jim Gold.

The song Što Mi E Milo is also sometimes done in 9/8 time, to which there is a completely different dance. The notes for the 9/8 version are linked here.

Shto mi e milo, milo i drago
Vo Struga grada, mamo, djukjan da imam.

    Lele varaj mome, mome Kalino,
Vo Struga grada, mamo, djukjan da imam

Koga po voda, voda mi odat,
So tia stomni, mamo, stomni shareni.

    Lele varaj mome, mome Kalino,
So tia stomni, mamo, stomni shareni.

How I would like to have a shop
    In the town of Struga
    Hurry, young Kalino
    To sit by the door
And watch the young girls of Struga go by
    Hurry, young Kalino
    As they fetch water
    With their brightly colored jugs
    Hurry, young Kalino
And meet with their friends at the well
    Hurry, young Kalino

Prídi, Janík premilený, prídi k nám

//Netrhaj ti pre mňa rozmarinu zelenú
    ani ružu červenu//

Come, Janik darling, come to our place.
I will give you a feather for your hat,
    red rose and green rosemary.
    Come, my lad, come.

Do not invite me, for your eyes are false.
You like to look at others.
