Sakarsko Horo (Bulgaria)

Posted on August 24, 2016 by muo

Sakarsko Horo
Сакарско Хоро
Bulgaria

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Taught to us by Iliana Bozhanova, August 23, 2016. The dance is from Iliana's mother's village in Thrace.

Music: Iliana and Lyuben IBLD11 (Mama si Rade Dumaše, Sluntse Zajde)
Meter: 2/4
Formation: Open circle, hands in escort position, leads to the R
Introduction: Start with singing

Part 1: Singing

Bar 1: Step R in LOD (1,2)
Bar 2: Step L in LOD (1,2)
Bar 3: Turning to face center, step on R to R (1), step on L behind R, with a bend of the knee (2)
Bar 4: Step on R to R (1), close L next to R, with weight (2)
Bars 5-104: repeat bars 1-4,  25 more times (26 in total -- this takes all of the singing, and then two more times in the instrumental to transition into part 2)

Part 2: Three measure Pravo Trakijsko

Hands come up to W position
Bar 1: Step on R in LOD (1), Cross L over R (2)
Bar 2: Step on R to R  (1) Čukče on R (2)
Bar 3: Step on L behind R (1) Čukče on L  (2)

repeat until leader calls a change.

Part 3: Six measure Pravo Trakijsko

Bar 1: traveling diagonally to the R into the center step R (1), L (2). In the first time through, the arms are already in W position. In subsequent times through the arms swing up to W.
Bar 2: Continuing to the diagonal R, step R  (1), Čukče on R (2), arms stay in W position but may push "up" a little big
Bar 3: Continuing to the diagonal R, step L (1), Čukče on L (2)
Bar 4: Backing out to diagonal R ("cutting a piece of pie"), Step R (1), L (2), arms swing down and back.
Bar 5: Step back on R, on the R diagonal (1), Čukče on R (2), arms swing forward
Bar 6: Step back on L, on the R diagonal, but starting to turn to face R of center (1), Čukče on L (2), arms swing back.

repeat until the end of the music.

Note: the way Iliana taught it in Tucson splits apart part 2 and part 3 and does them in sequence leader called. According to other notes, she originally taught it where you did Part 2 twice, then 1 time through Part 3, and then went back to Part 2, then part 3 etc.]

Lyrics:

I took these lyrics from:
http://archives.mvfolkdancers.com/0_Other%20Items%20of%20Interest/Door%20County%20Folk%20Festival%20Wisconsin/2007%20Door%20County%20Folk%20Festival%20Syllabus.pdf
But I'm betting they're originally from Iliana's notes, which I don't have access to.

Mama si Rade dumashe
From the village of Momkovo. near Svilengrad, South Thrace

Mama si Rade dumashe
-Rade le, byalo i huhavo,
sedi mi, Rade, ne hodi,
na choban Gergyov kladenets.

Che ti se, Rade, kaneha
Ivan i Stoyan - dvamata,
kaneha da to otkradnat,
Rade le, byalo i huhavo.

Rada si maika ne slusha,
the stana Rada otide
na choban Gergyov kladenets
studena voda da nalei.

Taman se toku navede -
zad neya kone tropnaha.
Koga se Rada barna -
Ivan i Stoyan dvamata.

Rada's mother said, "Rada, dear, fair and beautiful one, sit down, please; don't go to Chohan Gergyov's fountain. Because, Rada. Ivan and Stoyan are planning to abduct you, Rada, fair and beautiful. Rada didn't listen to her mother. Instead she got up and went to Chohan Gergyov's fountain - to get cold, fresh water. Just as she was bending over, a horse suddenly came clattering up behind her. When Rada turned around, there were Ivan and Stoyan together.

Sluntse zaide
From the village of Drazhevo, near Stara Zagora, Thrace

//Sluntse zaide, rosa pada -
Stanka v gradinka sedeshe. //

//Sluntse zaide, rosa pada -
rosna si kitka bereshe. //

//Sluntse zaide, rosa pada -
libe i voinik sha ide.//

//Sluntse zaide. rosa pada -
tya sha go kitka zakichi.//

The sun was setting, dew was falling, Stanka was sitting in the garden, picking a bouquet of dewy flowers. The sun is setting, dew is falling - her sweetheart, a soldier, is going away. She is going to pin her bouquet on him.
