Walpole Cottage (England)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally choreographed in 1963 by Pat Shaw in honor of Grace Duff Meikle and Leonie Morris, whose home in Chipstead Surrey was called Walpole Cottage.

Formation:  Sicilian Circle with trios of people facing another trio, in spokes of a wheel around the room.

O = Outside (Furthest from center in the trio), I = Inside (closest to center), M = middle person in the trio. Not necessarily a M, although traditional it was.

Introduction: 2 beats, no action

Part 1 Greeting (done each time through the dance)

Bars 1-4: Advance and Retire in lines of three facing the other trio.

Part 2: Contra Corners (A Music)

Bars 1-2: M1 and M2, turn each other by the R,
Bars 3-4: Then turn 1st corners, by the L  (M1 turns O2, M2 turns I1)
Bars 5-8: M1 and M2 turn each other by the R, and then turn 2nd corner's by the L (M1 turns I2, and M2 turns O1)
Bars 9-12: M1 and M2 turn each other by the R, and then turn own left hand partner by the L (M1 turns I1, M2 turns O2)
Bars 13-16:: M1 and M2 turn each other by the R, and then turn own right hand partner by the L (M1 turns O1, M2 turns I2)

Part 3: Hands across and Reel for 3 (B Music)

Bars 1-4: O1, O2, I1, I2, do a R hands across (R hand star), 1/2 way. Middles step out of the way.
Bars 5-8: same 4 do a L hands across (L hand star), 1/2 way
Bars 9-16: Do a R shoulder reel (hay) for 3 with own trio. M passes R shoulder with own right hand partner

Part 4: Forward and Back, Circle, Baskets (C Music)

Bars 1-4: Advance and Retire facing opposite Trio
Bars 5-8: Circle 6 1/2 across
Bars 9-12: Advance and Retire facing opposite Trio
Bars 13-16: With own trio, get into a back basket in a tight mini-circle and using a buzz step, swing around. Open up facing original direction and facing a new trio.  (If you like you can open with a new center so as to give some variety to who gets to do the contra corners)

Important note. For some reason, the recording used in this video lacks the 4 bar introduction the first time through and appends it to the end. So the dancers are 4 bars off the ABC structure of the music (i.e the musical phrasing doesn't align with the dance phrasing that I've listed above). Some of the other videos below have the dance and musical phrasing correctly lined up.
