Girl in the Red Dirndl - Dirndl Mit'm Roten Miader (Austria)

These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. The German title actually translates as "the Dirndl (dress) with the red apron". But the dance has come to be known as "The Girl in the Red Dirndl" in US international folk dancing.

Meter: 3/4
Formation: Start as couples, facing LOD, M on inside, W on outside, holding nearer hands

Eingang (Introduction):

Bars 1-2: no action
Bars 3-4: bow/curtsey to partner,

Part 1: Circle

Drop hands. M puts thumbs in trager, W holds skirt or apron. 

Men:
Bar 1: Take one step on L in LOD (CCW) (1,2,3)
Bar 2: Step R forward in LOD (1,2,3)
Bar 3: Step forward on L in LOD (1,2), stamp R next to L (3)
Bar 4: Stamp R next to L (1,2,3)
Bar 5: Step R forward in LOD (1,2,3)
Bar 6: Step forward on L (1,2), close R next to L with Weight (3)
Bar 7: Step forward on L, bending knee, so that R knee is touching the floor (1,2), slap floor with R hand (3)
Bar 8: Slap floor with R hand again (1,2,3)
Bar 9: Straighten up and Step forward in LOD on R (1,2,3)
Bar 10: Step forward on L in LOD on L (1,2,3)
Bar 11: Step forward on R in LOD (1,2), Clap in front of body (3)
Bar 12: Clap again (1,2,3)
Bars 13-16: repeat bars 1-4, except lift R knee on last count of bar 16 and clap.

Women:
Bars 1-2: Spinning CW but moving forward in LOD, use 2 waltz steps RLR, LRL,
Bar 3: Step on R in LOD (1,2), Switch weight to L and Clap, while looking at partner (3)
Bar 4: Clap again (1,2,3)
Bars 5-8: Repeat bars 1-4
Bars 9-16: Repeat bars 1-8

Part 2: Plattl

Men:
Bar 1: Hop on L foot with R knee raised, Slap R thigh with R hand (1), hit R thigh with L hand (&), Hop on L foot, hit R thigh with R hand (2), Hit R thigh with L hand (&),  Hop on L, kick R backwards and to the side, hit R heel back behind with R hand (3)
Bar 2: facing another man, slap their hands R (1) L (&) R (2), L (&), R (3) (the opposite man has to do opposite hands), hop on L on counts (1), (2) and (3)
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2
Bar 5: repeat bar 1
Bar 6: Leap onto R, kicking L behind and to the R, hit L heel with R hand (1), hop on R, and kick L forward high in front, slap L thigh with L hand (2), Scissor kick R foot forward while leaping onto L, Slap R thigh with R hand (3)
Bar 7: Repeat bar 6
Bar 8: Stamp R foot forward with hands in the air in surrender position (1,2), stamp R foot again (3)
Bars 9-11: repeat bars 6-8
Bar 12: Stamp R foot forward (1) clap hands in front (2), Hit raised R thigh with R hand (3) Hit R thigh with L hand (&)
Bar 13: Leap onto R and hit L heel behind with R hand (1), Hit L thigh with L hand (&), Hop on R foot and hit R thigh with R hand (2), Hit L thigh with L hand (&), Hop on R foot and hit L heel in front with R hand (3), Hit L thigh with L hand (&)
Bar 14: Leap onto L foot, hit R thigh with R hand (1), hit L thigh with L hand (&), Hop on L foot and hit R thigh with R hand (2), Hit L thigh with L hand (&), hop on L and kick R back and hit R heel with R hand (3), hit L thigh with L hand (&)
Bars 15-16: repeat bars 13-14
Bars 17-18: repeat bars 13-14
Bar 19: repeat bar 12
Bar 20: Jump on both feet, clap hands in front (2), Hit raised R thigh with R hand (3) Hit R thigh with L hand (&)



Women:
Spin in place behind M using waltz steps, RLR, LRL, etc. Stay behind partner.

Part 3: Circle

repeat part 1

Part 4: Plattl #2

repeat Part 2 but add on  the following extra bars:
Bars 21-27: repeat bars 12-18
Bar 28: jump on both feet (1,2,3)

Part 5: Chase

Bar 1-8: Men rotate CW around the inside of the circle with thumbs in trager. Women continue to spin CCW, the men should time this so that they end up coming up behind their partner then she rolls into his arms and...
Bars 9-24:  They continue her CW turning (moving in LOD) together in ballroom position (M's L and W's right is held low), using a Ländler step (waltz)

Bars 25-28: retaining both hand, W turns 1/2 CW under man's L. Keep W's L and M's right low in the small of her back.  Man kneels on R knee.  Pose.
