Gencsi VerbunkHungary
These notes ©2016, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Andor Czompo, who learned it from a group of men in Gencsapát in Western Hungary. Verbunks are recruiting dances. This one was apparently popular during the 1848 Freedom Fight against the Hapsburgs.

Formation: Men in a circle.
Introduction: 4 bars no action.
Part 1:
Bars 1-2: take 4 Walking steps in LOD, 2 counts per step. R, L, R, L, thumbs on beltBars 3: Step on R heel forward (1), Close L behind R (&), Step R forward (2), start to circle CW back to starting position. Arms swing to R. Then do the same with the other foot (3, &, 4). Arms swing to the L
Bars 4: repeat bars 3 back to place
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-4
Part 2:
Bar 1: Facing center, step R to R (1), Close L next to R, clap hands (2), Step L to L (3), Close R next to L, clap hands (4)Bar 2: Make a complete CW turn, moving slightly to the R, stepping R (1), L (2). Facing center, Jump on both feet at shoulder width (3), Click feet together (4)
Bars 5-8: repeat bars 1-2, three more times.
Part 3:
Bar 1: Facing center, step on R into the center (1), Lift L leg high and slap inside of boot by swinging L hand down from above (2), Step back out of center on L (3), Step on R next to L (4)Bar 2: Repeat bar 1 with opposite footwork
Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2
Bar 5: Hop on L and touch R toe to side (1), Hop on L, and touch R heel forward (2), Jump backwards on balls of both feet (3), chug forward on flats of both feet (4), arms are out to the sides throughout this step
Bar 6: Repeat bar 5 with opposite footwork
Bars 7-8: Repeat bars 5-6.
Part 4
Bar 1: Clap both hands (1), Hop on R; bring R hand up beside head; twist L knee inwards and L heel out (2), Lift L foot in front and hit L heel with R hand (3), Step on L next to R (4)Bar 2: Clap (1,&), Clap (ah), Clap (2), Clap (&), Clap (3), pause (&, 4)
Bars 3-8: Repeat bars 1-2, three more times
Part 5
Bars 1-2: Take 4 Walking steps in LOD, 2 counts per step. R, L, R, L, thumbs on beltBar 3: Facing center, step on R to R (1), Close L next to R with a bent knee, displacing R (2), Step on R to R (3), Close L next to R, no weight (4)
Bar 4: Repeat bar 3 with opposite footwork and directions
